Originally published in 1939, when A.A. membership numbered about one hundred, Alcoholics Anonymous has steadily grown in readership. By the time the second edition appeared in 1955, membership had reached over 15,000, and the Big Book, A.A. members’ fond title for their basic text, had reached a distribution of more than 300,000. At the time of the third edition, in March 1976, the worldwide membership of A.A. was estimated at 1 million or more. The basic text, pages 1-164, which had been the foundation of recovery for so many alcoholics remained, and still remains, unchanged. The General Service Conference-approved fourth edition of Alcoholics Anonymous was first printed in October 2001 and has been reprinted 30 times since then. This edition includes 24 new stories that provide contemporary sharing for newcomers seeking recovery from alcoholism in A.A. during the early decades of the 21st century. Sixteen stories are retained from the third edition, including the “Pioneers of A.A.” section, which helps the reader remain linked to A.A.’s historic roots and shows how alcoholics get sober today. More than 30 million copies of the first four editions of the Big Book have been distributed. This is the only A.A.W.S.-authorized e-book version of Alcoholics Anonymous.

  • Aggravating!

One of the main reasons for getting the e-version is to enhance my study of this book, but since the page numbers do not align with the regular book it creates more aggravation! I would recommend the app since it is free & has correct page numbers.
  • Disappointing

    By sojags
This would get 5 stars if it had the page numbers corresponding to the hard copy of the big book. I wish I would have read the reviews to see that this is an issue that has been brought up many times. If there are so many reviews stating this is a problem, why don’t you fix it???

    Still addicted to alcohol. Sad.
  • Page Numbers Different

Since they are not using Roman numerals, the page numbers do not line up. Makes it very difficult to reference this online version.
  • Page numbers don't match hard copy

Thank you for making the literature of Alcoholics Anonymous in electronic format! I'd give this a five star rating if the page numbers matched those of the hard copy. It's difficult to follow along in a book study where others are using paper copies of the book. Plus, there is a long practice of being able to cite a particular page number out of the book, but this eBook is formatted differently. Perhaps because of screen size issues. However, it would still be possible to keep the original page numbers in this version even if they were only displayed as where they fall next to the text. It is important.

Daily reading as suggested provides solution to my self centeredness by accepting life on life's terms.
  • Great to have as book, if only it had lasted

    By Mrshurley2011
I purchased this and the 12&12 ebony a couple of years ago. At that time, I believe I ordered them both from the AAWS online store. Then I had to go to iTunes and download "AA Reader" app. It was awesome until a few months ago. I was chairing a meeting and wen to open the big book app, and it said it wasn't downloaded, as did the 12&12 too. So I clicked download, and nothing happened. It flashed a download bar very quickly, but never downloaded. I am beyond irritated at this point. I have emailed tech support on this issue. I am hoping they figure something out fairly quickly. Has anyone else had this problem with the same older purchase method?
  • Correct page numbers

Great book but the page numbers need to match up with the physical copy of the Big Book. It's hard to follow along and turn to the right page when they don't match.
